RunWild was a prototype project
that would have been an epic game.

Essentially a riders on beasts racer, it gave us the

opportunity to concept a unique IP for Disney.

A real shame it never got the greenlight, someone

somewhere will do it one day I'm sure.
In the meantime, there is a lot of range here,
and if anyone finds one single piece inspiring,
then I'm a happy man.

The next project was a so hard.

I think I did over 70 individual character studies,

and none seemed to inspire the project leads.

By it's very nature 90% of concept work ends up in the bin,

but here I felt 100% failure.

As if to compound that,

when the project failed to meet greenlight

I was reallocated to environment modelling.

A task I hadn't undertaken since 7 years prior.

ATV Games. I've worked on many,

from character modeller to concept artist to Lead Character Artist.

I'd be happy to never do another.

Ever.

Lastly there is some Pure2 concepts, not to be, but had massive potential.

The next post features work from 2005 to 2010 and

should show my transition from traditional to digital,

image 4 is the last scanned image before I started

drawing everything natively in the computer.

The fully rendered images are a little cheesy,

but it seems the way forward at the moment -

though hopefully with a little more sophistication.

As a multiplayer game, Avalon was a blast,

finding a single player format was always tricky,

here's the animatic to sell the single player mode.

I only drew the frames,

the edit was done by Dan Porter and sound by Steve Rocket,

they live over here now: The Trailerfarm

Speaking of the frames, here's a few,

I coloured about 60 of these in a week.

After the Metallica game I joined the Moto GP team

to concept and build a few characters for their prototype project: Avalon.

It became a high point and the very lowpoint of my game career.

I was tasked with coming up with four distinct body types to reflect

the weapon classes: gunner, grenadier, sniper, rocketeer.

This was my initial concept. I am going to say no more, except:

WE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED HERE ;)

Circa 2004:

Of course game dev is not so simple.

Below are the iterations and then the direction changes

which occured after a short break in the prototyping.

Sadly the game wasn't picked up.

I was under increasing pressure to become a painter,

which lead me to where I am now I guess.

It also taught me to be as

hard as nails when it comes to feedback.

Next time, the Avalon Animatic.

For a while it was illegal to post these anywhere,

it may still be, who knows!

Anyway, designs for a PS2 postapocalyptic driving/adventure game

(set to the sounds, and including the members, of a

popular anti-Napster mega band)

Dating from 2003 to 2004.

I really enjoyed creating this stuff, and it sort of set

the ball rolling... ahh the good old days.

I only use one brush size by the way,

this was the triangular headed brush,

set to go from 0.1 to 132 depending on pressure.

Same goes for my more rugular shaped brushes.

Again, fairly straight forward. Drawn out in SBPro, I use

different layers to build up the form. The main grey and black layers,

then some with varying opacity.

The 'clouds' are some watercolours I created and scanned a while back,

these are tweaked and then plenty of adjustment layers later...
